what I did this summer COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

what I did this summer COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Internship in Country Risk Management at J.P. Morgan Prior to attending SIPA my experience was in banking; however the reason I chose SIPA for my graduate studies was to transition into a role that offers more of a macro and international picture, allowing me to work in a field where macroeconomics, capital markets, and risk meet and of course a role where I am challenged every day and get to learn and apply my skills. I had the chance to work in Country Risk Management (CRM) at J.P. Morgan during the summer. It all started with three representatives visiting SIPA to host an information session in the fall of 2013. What followed was an application process, consisting of four phone and four in person interviews.   I consider myself fortunate that I received the opportunity to be a part of the team and the culture at the bank, because this is a dream job for a SIPA student. It was a 10 week internship, starting in June with a couple of weeks of training. The first week I was part of the Sales Trading (ST) Markets Training group, where a bout 100 interns were trained on basics, such as what is equity, what is a bond through how markets are supposed to behave to how financial derivatives fit into the bank. The second week, I took part in a more risk specific training to be prepared for my eight weeks at the desk. Before the training weeks were completed, students were formed into groups of four to prepare a case study to competitively pitch to senior management. After some valuable training I was excited to finally join my CRM team and to apply my skills learnt and advanced at SIPA. The team in CRM was relatively small on a global basis and therefore I had a chance to work closely with colleagues also based in London and Hong Kong. The eight weeks were packed and I had several deliverables on top of assisting with ad-hoc tasks. However, it was a super learning experience and with the great support of the team I was able to master my objectives successfully. My summer objectives were based around the main work the team does, such as internal ratings of countries and measuring the exposure risk the bank experienced. The summer program was well structured. Each intern had a junior and senior mentor, who assisted the intern throughout the summer. Throughout the program there were also different social and professional events. Social events consisted of visiting a New York Yankee game and having dinner at different places. The professional events included senior speaker series with management from the bank. These were all very interesting; however I would say the highlight was when Jamie Dimon spoke to us and shared his experiences in banking and at J.P. Morgan. My summer experience at the bank has been wonderful and it was great to meet so many professionals with whom I look forward to staying in touch and working together in the future. It may be the fall semester only; however the sooner you start looking for your dream internship, the higher the chances that you will be working there during the following summer. Good luck! by Andreas Maerki, MPA International Finance and Economic Policy Dec ‘14 What I did this summer COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog I spent my summer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My professional and academic interests are on politics and development in Latin America, particularly on innovation in the public sector. My decision to spend my summer in Rio de Janeiro came as a mixture of academic and personal curiosity. On one side, I was familiar with some of the innovation efforts been carried out by the Secretary of Education of Rio and I was eager to learn more about their programs. On the other side, despite its political and economic importance for Latin America I knew very little about Brazil. Hence, the offer to intern at the Secretary of Education of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro came just in time and I was ready to depart to my destination. The Secretary of Education of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro (SME) is in charge of the municipal red of schools of Rio de Janeiro, that is, a total of 1.076 schools including kinder garden and elementary level, with 633.449 students enrolled and 42.536 teachers. The challenges of the public system are numerous and diverse, especially for the schools located in dangerous areas. In order to improve the quality of education in public schools and the quality of life of the communities where they are located, the current Secretary of Education, Claudia Costín, along with her team started to implement several very interesting initiatives. One of these initiatives, for which I had the opportunity to work, is Escolas do Amanhã, which was created for schools that were in favelas recently pacified. Given the weak presence of the government in these communities, the program changed the structure of these schools to include services that supported the community, like health and parenting services. Another unique program currently in place is called GENTE, which promotes a new concept of school that fully integrates the new educational technologies and places the student in the center of the learning process. The pilot school for the program is called Escola Municipal Andre Uraní and it is located in Rocinha, the biggest favela of Rio. I also had the opportunity of working with the team from GENTE, visit the pilot school and learn some of the philosophy behind their model. In the case of GENTE, all the students are given a laptop computer through which they do most of their learning. This is possible thanks to Educopédia, an online platform of digital classrooms where students learn the curriculum while teachers follow their progress and evaluation, also included in the platform. I spend a total of two months and a half in Rio de Janeiro. The internship was inspiring and very interesting, as it was the rest of experience in the country. The city is beyond beautiful, the culture is vibrant, the juices are natural and the beaches are amazing. I was lucky enough to be in Rio during the Confederation Coup, the visit of the Pope and the starting of the protests that are still taking place all over Brazil. It was a great summer indeed. Four Major Issues In U.S. - Free Essay Example

November is the month where people vote. When it comes to picking the right candidate   to vote for you got many things you need to look at to make sure they are the perfect candidate. The biggest thing that you need to look at is there issues they talk about and how they fix them up. The issues they may be talking about someone may not care about. That is why you   make sure that you are looking at their issues very carefully and liking what they have to say. Each candidate is going to try and lead you down a different path. A lot of the issues they talk about can taken many different ways. You will be informed on some major issues that most to me and find out how I think they should be taken. There are many reasons why education is a big issue right now in the United States. This is very important to me because I got many years to still be going to school. Right now the United States is considered to be the lowest in math. The United States is also low in many other categories. The reason for being so low is because when students take PISA tests that the government looks at we are not meeting the right number to be considered passing. Our scores on the PISA test are way to low. Teachers are trying hard to get there students to improve there score on the PISA tests.   As long as long as we are working hard to get our PISA scores up I do not have a problem with the policy put in place right now. It is not a good thing for the United States to be the lowest. The students need to learn how to pay attention during class that way when they come to take the PISA test they know a little something. It could also help if the teachers are lecturing about what is going to be on the PISA test. Most of the time what teachers are talking about is not what is on the tests that government takes a look at. When that happens you are going into the test clueless   and end up guessing. That does not help you to get a passing grade so the United States gets off the bottom of the list. Lets solve this issue by making sure that students are getting proficient scores on the PISA test. In the United States right now there is a big issue with health care. I care about this issue because there will be a day that I will have to pay for healthcare on my own. The biggest problem with American healthcare right now is the care. It is very important to have stable insurance markets, and good benefits but that is not going to help reduce the price or make Americans healthier. The healthcare that we got right now is getting old so updating it would be a great thing to do. There are lots of people in the world who have problems and need healthcare to help them pay for there bills. America is losing lots of money due to having to help pay for peoples illnesses. I do not like the way we are handling healthcare issue right now. We need to update our healthcare policy. The big issue about this is when you had healthcare at a job but then lose your job. Then you do not have any money to pay for medical bills. When this starts to happen you start to lose lots of money. There needs to be a way that hospital bills and insurance rates can be lowered. We need to help everyone out so they are not complaining about losing all of their money. Lots of   the medial bills that people have to pay are not planed. When you have to pay for something unplanned your probably are not going to have all the money that is needed. Lets help solve this issue by lower healthcare rates. Gun Control is one of the major issues in the United States right now. This is a major issue to me because I want to me able to outside and feel safe. America is making lots of money off the amount of firearms they are selling. The United States has the Second Amendment that allows people to carry firearms. There are American people that see the bearing of arms a right and others see it as holding America back. Firearms are a very deadly weapon. Firearms are leaving several Americans dead each month. The bad use of firearms is costing America way to much money. Americans probably think that is okay to do bad things with firearms because bad things with them are always happening. As long as we are taking care of all the bad violence that is happening with the firearms I do not mind the policy we got right now. Also Americans are seeing what   people are doing with firearms on tv and want to try it out. There are many reason in America why we have firearms. If we want to keep the fir earms we got and the sale of firearms we got today we need to stop with the violence with the firearms. Causing violence with a firearm does not make you a better person. When you cause violence with a firearm is goes on your personal record. There are lots of places and people that look at your person record before they hire you or when they need to look at your personal record to fill there deed with you. Lets just figure out how to use firearms the right way. We need to stop violence. We can make this become a forgotten issue if we just use firearms the right way. Taxes have always been a major issue in the United States. I care about this issue because on somethings that I buy I have to pay taxes which is not something like doing. People are always complaining about the rate they have to pay for taxes. There are many different things that people are paying taxes for. You got sales tax, social security, medicare, and ect. Some of that tax money we pay does go to good things like paying for roads and schools.  Ã‚   If we can find a way to make the take policy a lot simpler that would be helpful. It is not like we are just having to pay all these taxes and waist the money on stupid things. We need to make our tax policy so it is fair for everyone. When it comes to the amount of takes that is having to be paid everyone is paying for the same things and usually at the same percent. The problem with that is that not everyone is making the same amount of money. So therefore some people are having a hard time coming up with the money that they need to pay for taxes. No one wants to be those who become poor people after paying off there tax due but it happens to more people than you would think. If there was a way to even taxes out by what class you are in that would be helpful. Anything to help people to not become poor after paying taxes would be great.   This is an easy issue to fix we can just figure the major issue with taxes right now. There are so many issues to talk about. As you found out my 4 major issues are education, healthcare, gun control, and taxes. Those seem to be the ones making the most impact on the United States. You have just been explained how I would fix them up. You got all rights to agree or disagree with how I feel about each issue. Hopefully you like what I had to say.

A Brief Note On The American Public Health Association

It costs taxpayers over $2 billion dollars a year in medical charges to care for victims of firearms-related injuries. The American Public Health Association (APHA) released a study at their annual meeting stating that â€Å"the high figures underline the need to treat gun violence in the U.S. as a public health issue as well as a law enforcement challenge.† There are massive amounts of people that get hurt each year by guns, which puts a huge burden on our healthcare system. According to the American Public Health Association, â€Å"one out of every three patients hospitalized for gun injuries was uninsured. Many of these uninsured victims of gun violence will see their medical costs reduced due to President Obama’s health care reform law, which offers more low-income Americans access to Medicaid. Between 2000 and 2010, 275,939 individuals were victims of gunfire in the U.S., and received 1.7 million days of hospital charges which only included costs after the pa tient was admitted, which does not include emergency room costs.† The cost for a person to be hospitalized for medical treatment due to a firearms-related injury is approximately $75,884, which is about $14,000 more than that of the average hospital stay due to the severity of the injuries often involved, and approximately 31,000 die, addition to the enormous number of injuries from guns. Toward A Model Of Early Childhood Education ...

This is a critical analysis of ‘Toward a model of early childhood environmental education: foregrounding, developing and connecting knowledge through Play Based Learning† by Amy Mackezie and Susan Edwards (2013). Researchers want to introduce an innovative learning model in the field of education to help teachers and educator incorporate environmental education while playing in preschool (Cutter Edwards, 2013). This article engages pedagogical accents allied with environmental education as well as early year’s childhood education (Creswell, 2012). Based on the qualitative research of Amy and Susan, they studied earlier researches and identified new ways to educate young children about environment through play . The main purpose of the study done by Amy and Susan was to develop a thinking model to help early learning educator connect environmental learning in early childhood education. The central idea of this article is to teach environmental education at a very early age by creating early learning frameworks and educating teachers as well to help develop healthy beliefs in children on daily basis about Mother Nature. Environmental education plays a significant role in early childhood education when integrated with early year learning frameworks and daily environmental activities (Edwards, Cutter-Mackenzie Hunt, 2010). It should be noted that the research was done over 15 years, which was then analysed to reflect over various pedagogical plays which furnish teachersShow MoreRelatedImportance Of Play Education And Development Of Children Under 5 Years1754 Words   |  8 Pages Importance of Play in Education and Development of Children Under 5 Years David Moore Charter Oak State College â€Æ' Introduction The training and development of an individual begins at birth and continues well into adulthood. Journeys End by R.C Sherriff. - 1739 Words

How does Journeys End show the effects of war on the men involved? Journeys End is a play about British soldiers in World War One, and the effects the war has on them, both physically and mentally. The play explores many aspects of war life, including friendship, alcoholism, class boundaries and the lifestyle of the men in the trenches. This essay explores how the play shows the effects of war on those involved, looking at use of dialogue, lighting, props and other key dramatic devices. The essay will mainly focus on Act 3, Scene 2 of the play, but relevant quotes from other scenes in Journeys End will also be used to help illustrate points. Stanhope, the Commander of the company, is a prime example of how the war effected many†¦show more content†¦Raleighs first reaction upon entering the trenches (Act 1) is that of surprise. He has been expecting more noise and excitement, and says to Osborne, How frightfully quiet it is! To begin with, Raleigh is very eager to go out and fight, but Osbornes death after the raid has a big effect on him. He cannot understand how the men can sit, eating fine food and drinking champagne ,when one of their closest companions has been killed. However, Raleigh does not realise that the reason why they are doing this is to try and help themselves to forget the tragedy that has occurred, and to boost morale amongst the men. Raleigh has misunderstood the situation, and only realises his error at the end of Act 3 Scene 2, when Stanhope shouts, You think theres no limit to what a man can bear? Raleigh tries to apologise, but Stanhope is too incensed with rage to listen. By the end of that particular scene, even though Raleigh has only been at war for a week, he is already a changed person. His short battle experience has erased whatever distorted expectations he has had before, and he now knows about the harsh realities of life in the trenches. We know this because of his obvious change in mood and personality- by Act 3 Scene 2 he says a lot less than he has beforehand, and stage directions tell us at one point, Raleigh speaks in a low, halting voice. How Management has changed with respect to Globalization Free Essays

Various things have and will persist to amend the practice of management. Advancing expertise, changing demographics, immense diversity in the workforce, and globalization are just some of the changes facing managers at present. These factors will persist to change the methods in which management runs. We will write a custom essay sample on How Management has changed with respect to Globalization or any similar topic only for you Order Now The globe now is not the world that subsisted years back. Globalization has fetched gigantic changes to the world of commerce and it has changed loads of sides of the management world (Palpacuer, 2006). Today’s globalization is disparate from what has gone earlier for two rationales. First is technological, the acceleration of interactions. Many communications expansions have been occurring more than the preceding half-century, but the current momentum of change, the magnification of capacity for information diffusion and the dissemination of communications media have not been experienced in the past. The other is a shift in the policy setting: liberalization uprising, an opening of markets and lessening in the part of government in terms of rights and command over manufacturing of goods and services (Feenstra, 1998). Corporations nowadays can arrive at customers in every country and can cut overheads via global production and allotment systems. Managements experience regular change, extreme competition, and amplified customer expectation, which formulates it progressively challenging for an organization to uphold its competitive border. These days, flourishing managements must appraise the competitive background and kit out their organizations with the tactics, configurations, and workers to compete in a frequently changing milieu (Swain, 1999). Globalization has changed new criteria, and every management must be ready to meet this transform by exploiting the aptitudes of leadership and communication, plus the capability to lead his or her industry through any sort of change. Show how the tension between Jew and Christian Is brought to ahead in the trial scene of The Merchant of Venice Essay Example For Students

Show how the tension between Jew and Christian Is brought to ahead in the trial scene of The Merchant of Venice Essay When Shakespeare wrote his play The Merchant of Venice, Christians hated Jews. Christians had believed since the Elizabethan times that the Jews killed Christ. This became the reason for banning the Jews from England for 300 years; Jews had just been let into Christian societies when the play was written. The play wouldve had large audiences as it was set in an exotic place, Venice. No one would have been to Venice, which would of made the play more intriguing. In 1597 when the play was written, families would visit the theatre regularly; people loved a bit of comedy so Shakespeare had to write a play that entertained his audience. Many things went on whilst the play did and people would carry on talking throughout the whole production. If the audience were not happy then they would feel obliged to show their appreciation by throwing vegetables at the actors. Every actor had to be a male so a boy would play a woman. Acting for women was thought to be a profession as low as prostitution. In the lead up to the trial scene, Shakespeare shows the tension between Jews and Christians. Shylock (Jew) and Antonio (Christian) clearly hate each other and have no respect for each others religion or way of life. When Shylock and Antonio meet for the first time, in the play, Shylock tells us just how much respect Antonio has for him, you spat on me Wednesday last, You spurned me such a day, another time You called me dog: and for these courtesies Ill lend you thus much monies. This short little speech of Shylocks is showing us the kind of things Christians did to Jews. To spit on someone you must not have a care in the world for them and think of them as disgusting or an inhuman wretch. Calling Shylock a dog was just as bad, because back when the play was written dogs were not mans best friends. Dogs could be treated as bad as the next Jew, kicking them would have been a favourite pastime of the Christians. Shylocks opinion of Antonio is very low, but Antonio gives Shylock no reason to like him, even just a bit, or to show mercy on him, when the trial scene comes. Antonio answers Shylock after his small speech with, I am as like to call thee so again, To spit on thee again, to spurn thee too. This statement shows how little respect Shylock and Antonio actually have for each other. The hate is clear and for Antonio to say that he will continue to treat Shylock badly even if he was to lend him money, Jews must have been nothing, not even thought of as humans, just there to use, for example to borrow money from, when the Christians wanted. Shylock and Antonio are very much different, not only for having different religions, wearing different clothes, with different looks about them, but personality wise too. They are very different characters, as Antonio is the kind of man who lends money to his friends willingly, not knowing when or if he would get it back. He lends out money gratis, and brings down The rate of usance here with us in Venice. Shylock on the other hand is professional in everything he does. Business is business, which should be done properly, that is why he would write up a Bond. The Bond is a guarantee that he would get his money back, with interest, with in three months, or else a forfeit is in hand. .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 , .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .postImageUrl , .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 , .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623:hover , .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623:visited , .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623:active { border:0!important; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623:active , .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623 .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u431b139d655f19421224b79abcd1c623:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: THE MERCHANT OF VENICE Essay Summary.let the forfeit Be nominated for an equal pound Of your fair flesh, to be cut off and taken In what part of your body pleaseth me. This may seem to be unreasonable but I think Shylock never intends to make it so. Antonio was very sure his ships would make it to their destinations and there fore his money would be back and there, to pay back the borrowed money. Shylock doesnt just have one reason to hate Christians, as he is given so much ammunition, but doesnt choose to fire back until the trial comes. He builds up all his anger and his revenge on Christians, which is there fore taken out on poor Antonio. Shylock even uses this hold he has on Antonio to relieve himself of the anger he had, after his daughter left taking some of his money and Jewels with her to marry a Christian. .If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his sufferance be by Christian example? Why, Revenge! As the trial scene starts you are given a clear indication that Shylock is hated, even the Duke (judge) is against him. A stony adversary, an inhuman wretch, Uncapable of pity, void and empty From any dram or mercy. When the Duke says this you get a clear picture of him walking over to a table saying it softly to himself, shaking his head and with the audience of this time very much agreeing. As every one is settled in the courtroom waiting for Shylock to enter the tension would have been immense, everyone staring at the door, looks of disgust on their faces. When Shylock finally enters the message is clear that the Christians want Shylock to show mercy and would rather take the pound of flesh from him than Antonio. .Thoult show thy mercy and remorse more strange than is thy strange apparent cruelty. All of Antonios friends would be at the side like a jury but allowed to get up and say what they thought of the situation and Shylock would be sat on the other side of the Duke with his scales and knife at the ready. Antonio would be sat in the middle for all the court and audience to see him. After Shylock is settled and put out his equipment he is questioned vigorously but refuses to answer each question directly. Shylock is clever with his answers and says I am not bound to please thee with my answers. Shylock has only one obvious reason revenge but he cant express this at the start, as he knows the Christians would totally disagree unless the situation was reversed. As we get into the scene and the Christians believe they are losing, the Duke calls in a young doctor of Rome to help the case and with some luck get Antonio off the hook. Portia responds to all Shylocks answers in his favour, A Daniel come to judgement: yea a Daniel! O wise young judge, how I do honour thee! This makes the drama of the whole play increase, as Shylock is sure he is winning and will get his bond. This part of the play would have been very tense and would have had the audience biting their nails, not wanting the Christians to die. Shylock would have been shocked to see Portia was on his side, agreeing that the law says he must have his bond and to see an honest Christian would have been a shock to him, he wouldnt of been expecting it at all. Shylock also would not of been expecting a chance to actually take his bond. He had prepared very well for this and with his equipment at the ready and Portias go ahead Antonios friends would not of been pleased. .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c , .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .postImageUrl , .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c , .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c:hover , .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c:visited , .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c:active { border:0!important; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c:active , .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8fea33f05b24ec0dcaab6d8903129b0c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Cosy play EssayWhy then, thus it is: You must prepare your bosom for his knife. As Shylock is ready to take his bond, Portia stands in the background whilst all eyes are on Antonio and Shylock. Then as if from nowhere just as Shylock has a chance to take his pound of flesh she steps forward to ask, Have by some surgeon, Shylock, on your charge, To stop his wounds, lest he do bleed to death. This is a very tense moment in the play as you start to get a hint of what will follow, but Shylock proceeds, I can not find it, tis not in the bond. And the whole court would of sunk back down into their seats, with what little hope they had of Antonios survival gone. As every one is stood at the back not wanting to see their friend die Shylock continues and just as the moment comes, when the audience all take in a breathe loudly, Portia steps forward unexpectedly, This bond doth give thee here no jot of blood. The words expressly are a pound of flesh. This is the turning point of the whole play, a sigh of relief through the whole court and the tension drops dramatically. Antonios friends would have a lot to say and were open to mock the Jew. O Jew, an upright judge, a learned judge! The audience watching wouldve found the disappointment of the Jew quite amusing and reacted with an outburst of laughter. Shylock would now want to get out of the situation as easy as he could, obviously knowing the Christians would want to drain him of everything he owns to get their revenge. Portia is constant to keep the Jew in the court and give him what they think as reasonable justice. The end of the trial scene would be most favoured throughout all the Christians as their hate for Jews would be shown in the way Shylock ended up with most of his belongings taken from him or destine to be given away once he dies. When Shylock leaves the court being told he must convert to become a Christian, the audience watching the play when it was first written would of accepted this but today people would feel sorry for him. Knowing a Jews religion is the most important to them. Throughout the play Antonio is put across as a sad character and at the end of the trial scene I think Antonio will be looking pleased with himself making it obvious he was scared of death. Overall I think the tension in the trial scene is show by giving the play such a plot as Portia being the judge, knowing or not knowing what will happen.

Competency Integration in Accounting Education †MyAssignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about the Competency Integration in Accounting Education. Answer: Introductions: Communication is regarded as the core activity in the profession of accounting as communications facilitates transformation of interest from one person to another person or a combination of both and to shareholders or stakeholders of the organizations. Effective communications form the important aspects of the business dealings with employees and outsiders such as vendors and clients (Wilson, Gray and Hamilton 2016). Accounting forms an inherent part of any business and goods communications is considered as the vital in performance of business activities. Significant financial tasks in the form of preparation of budget and reporting, payment of bill, payroll and recording of income should be presented appropriately to the management and others to be regarded as useful and meaningful. The function of communication is to make sure that each member of the organization knows what is anticipated. Good communications is considered to be critical in ensuring coordination and control of each individuals, group and departments (Wilson, Gray and Hamilton 2016). The profession of accountancy must understand clear and succinct communications along with the significances of poor communications. Better communications make sure that individuals understand what they anticipate, that the correct person obtains the correct information and ensure appropriate coordination inside the organizations. It makes sure that the control of the organization plans and procedures and the instructions provided by the management to the staff are understood. In the modern world accountants are faced with the complex situations. They are not only burdened with the responsibility of measuring economic data but they also have to shoulder the responsibility of communicating the data in a meaningful manner to the various users or receivers of the accounting information (Gaviria, Arango and Valencia 2015). These users are generally investors, creditors, government, management and others within the business organization. All these users need accounting information since this information are important in decision-making processes. The most noteworthy use of the accounting facts is to communicate significant evidence that allows the organisation to undertake good decisions (Wilson 2016). In order to make the information real, accounting information should be meaningful and must be understood otherwise it is simply the list of facts having no actual meaning. Several business makes the use of the templates for interior reports in order to communicate information in a matter, which is conversant and simple to use by the organisation. For instance, financial departments might obtain actual versus budgeted forecast reports each month as using this similar format might help in understanding and analysis. Other vital users of the accounting information are the investors as they are the one that wants to know and understand the how the business is performing financially. Generally, such kind of accounting information is communicated with the help of the standard reports generally in the balance sheets and income statements, accumulated by using generally accepted accounting principles (Apostolou et al. 2015). A balance sheet represents the assets, including cash, liabilities and owners equity. An income statement on the other hand represents income and expenditure of the business during a specified period of time. Both such statement are combined each month that allows the comparison and analysis from the investors point of view. A large number of investors would want to see whether cash flow statements having information regarding inflow and outflow of the money. An important consideration regarding the communication of accounting information is that such information should be communicated correctly to the government units at the time of levies (Lawson et al. 2015). For instance, taxes require sales and makes the use of tax on specific substances with accounting evidence should be obtainable under an assured manner to be significant. Alternative example of government communications is the yearly tax return with interior revenue service as under such circumstances evidence is following the specific rules and regulations. Banks on the other hand, might want to be appraised regarding the monetary situation of the companies, by establishing communication of accounting substances forming as the main concern in several companies. In the case of the bank loans, there can be episodic reports that makes the use of the accounting information (Rebele and Pierre 2015). Banks are generally involved in the cash flows and might need distinctive reporting in case of a companys position of liquidity together with both the short-term books receivables and payables. All this kind of material should be conversed to the bank clearly or else the business might not obtain loan. One of the best example of promoting effective communication for any form of accounting information is to do the same in writing and in a report format in accordance with the description on the left hand side of the pages. This helps in effective transformation of accounting commination with summarized version of information to facilitate better understanding for the financial users of the information. The significance of communication in accounting is considered as the language of the business, there are large number of people that consider accounting as the number however accounting is more than just the number (Dickfos, Cameron and Hodgson 2014). Business is changing and so are the belief regarding the descriptions along with the associated skills necessary to perform the jobs. An important consideration in this regard has been bought forward which states the stereotypical role of the accountant is merely characterised as the introverted persons. As numbers should be replaced with the understanding that current, accounting professionals is necessary to possess the interpersonal skills to help with the decision-making procedure across all the areas of functions regarding the accounting principles and decisions. The accountant of current era, particularly under the realms of the managerial accounting are required to communicate their ideas and financial information to others in the company of many where non-accountants and non-financial people are tactful and effective. Management accountant are required to be now a better communicator (Deegan 2013). The Practical analysis of the management accountant sought after in determining the methods involved in the changing roles of the accountants. There are circumstances when the accountants and the management will be able to communicate better regarding the changes and results and the information relating to the financial statements. Additionally, effective communication helps in providing accurate information in the form of various notes. In order to administer such situations, the accountant and the manager are required to develop the effective communication skills both verbally and in written manner (Lawson et al. 2016). this will additionally help in enabling communication amid the international users of the financial instrument along with the companies that seek to publish the information. Several studies have examined that oral communications skills is considered as the usually graded working accountants being the further significant than the written skills of communications. According to several studies that have distinguished amid the formal and informal communications skills. As stated by Jack, Davison and Craig (2013), there has been an evidence where the accountants as more significant than the formal skills of oral communications regard oral communications skills. Similarly, informal writing skills is placed on the higher side in the list of important practicing accountants than the formal writing skills. According to Wilson (2016), professionals of accounting must be able to present, converse and report their opinions with the help written and spoken communications. Although the readings have unswervingly addressed the communications skills required by the working accountants however, the general conclusions are regarded as uncertain. There is certain agreement that states that the practicing accountants regard informal oral and written skills of communications as the most noteworthy. Several research has revealed some of the contrasting views among the instructors and secretarial practitioners regarding how the communications skills must be prioritized. As stated by Slack (2014), it has been reported based on the survey that the opinions of the commercial communications instructors and bookkeeping practitioners are carefully associated. However, the opinions of the practitioners have deviated from what was stated in the survey. The deviation states a greater requirement for cooperation among the accounting professionals and the specialist of communications so that an improvement can be made level of communications for the graduates accountants. The significance of communication skills regarding accountants have been measured and conversed for more than half a century. Nevertheless, several elementary queries continue to be unanswered or remains unsettled. One of the prime reason surrounding the queries is the weakness in the classifications of communications skills considered in the previous studies. In addition to this, a large number of the current skills of communication researched is out-dated with slender in possibility and is restricted to terrestrial research. One of the important challenge for the secretarial instructors is to make sure that the transferable is aligning with the most regularly achieved task of communication in bookkeeping. To attain this, there must be a collaboration among the instructors, practitioners and in specific communication specialist to recognize the pertinent skills of communications that is required to be implemented in the accounting programs. As stated by Ahadiat and Martin (2016) educators that are involved in the incorporation of the communication skills in the accounting agendas must ascertain the lessons in providing necessary, movable abilities for the practicing professionals. Greater degree of teamwork among the secretarial profession, accounting instructors and communication specialist is considered to be critical, assuming the viewpoint that has been detected amongst the three groups. As cited by Wilson (2016), detailed technical proficiency would always form the part of the accounting success however accountants that develops the skills of strong communications will have greater chances of success. As understood, practicing accountants seem to consider the significance of the informal communication skills greater than the formal skills of communication. Burns and Needles (2014), have placed greater amount of importance for accountants having the aptitude to communicate the nonconcrete ideas to the audience with non-accountants backgrounds in the casual settings. Instructors on the other hand, have placed formal communication skills over the informal skills of communications. This suggest a disconnection and suggests that programs of accounting may not be placing emphasis or arranging the abilities of communications that is considered very critical to the occupation. As such, the difference amid the formal and informal communication skills should be evidently recognised and agreed. Facts on the comparative implication of formal versus the informal communications skills across both the oral and written dimensions and underlying the attributes along with the components, which supp orts these, must be defined with the help of carefully designed research studies. Conclusion: On arriving at the conclusion, the study has reviewed the current literature and has identified the numerous skills concerning the knowledge gaps. It lay down the substance for forthcoming investigators that are interested in discovering the abilities of the communications by the accountants. By more specifically recognising the wants and anticipations of practicing accountants, educators of accounting will be better capable of targeting particular communication skills and components through which the design of the accounting program and innovation educations. The study has conclusively placed greater amount on the formal communication with greater amount of emphasis must be placed on the informal communication. Telecommunication industry can be characterized as a fruitful and profitable Industry Owe to ten Toweling. Entry barriers reduce the rate of entry of new firms, thus maintaining a level of profits for those already in the industry. In this industry, the Government has taken steps to introduce managed competition in the industry by offering various telecommunications licenses. To date, the Government has awarded only eight mobile licenses to operators in Malaysia. For example: Telecoms Malaysia had a virtual monopoly on telecommunications services in Malaysia 2. Rivalry among existing firms: Profitability of the industry also affected greatly by the intensity of competition among existing firms in the industry. Telecommunication industry consists of only several mobile operators such as TM, Maxis, Dig due to the entry restriction that imposed by the government. Therefore, rivalry among Competitors Telecommunication industry in Malaysia is oligopoly structure nowadays and the level of competition in this particular industry is said to be low one. 2. 3 Threat of substitute product: Another force that directly affected the profitability of an industry is the threat of bustiest product. In Porters model, substitute products refer to products in other industries. Substitute product is the product or services that is different from the existing product/services but serves the similar needs. Products and services from non-traditional telecoms industries pose serious substitution threats. Cable TV and satellite operators now compete for buyers. Besides that, the substitute product for the mobile services in telecommunication also included fax, email or even letter. A threat of substitutes exists when a products demand is affected by the price change of a substitute product. This threat is said to be a weak one because these substitute products such as letter or e-mail are unable to fulfill or completely replace the mobile services. 2. 4 Bargaining power of buyers Bargaining power of buyers is another force that affected the profitability in telecommunication industry. The buyers in this industry are all services customer and said to have low bargaining power to the services provider. This is because Tm is the sole provider of fixed line telephone services in Malaysia, other mobile operator such as Dig , Maxis, Cellos account for approximately 85% of mobile services in Malaysia. As a result, this contributes to concentration of the buyers industry. Besides this, the buyers have high switching cost in this industry. As a result, the industry is more profitable when the buyers have low bargaining power (indicating that the buyers are unable to affect the setting of prices in the industry). 2. 5 Bargaining power of suppliers The last determinant of profitability in telecommunication industry is bargaining power of suppliers. The suppliers in this industry can be the suppliers of raw materials/component such as cable, broadband equipment, mobile handset, and software.

Quotes from Life on the Mississippi by Mark Twain

Quotes from Life on the Mississippi by Mark Twain Life on the Mississippi is a memoir by Mark Twain. In it, he describes his many adventures and experiences on the river, with its history, features, etc. Here are a few quotes from the book: Quotes From Chapter 1 The Mississippi is well worth reading about. It is not a commonplace river, but on the contrary is in all ways remarkable. Considering the Missouri its main branch, it is the longest river in the worldfour thousand three hundred miles. It seems safe to say that it is also the crookedest river in the world, since in one part of its journey it uses up one thousand three hundred miles to cover the same ground that the crow would fly over in six hundred and seventy-five.The world and the books are so accustomed to use, and over-use, the word new in connection with our country, that we early get and permanently retain the impression that there is nothing old about it. Quotes From Chapters 3 and 4 Sired by a hurricane, damd by an earthquake.Ch. 3When Im playful I use the meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude for a seine, and drag the Atlantic Ocean for whales! I scratch my head with the lightning, and purr myself to sleep with the thunder!Ch. 3Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates.Ch. 4 Quotes From Chapters 6 and 7 I was gratified to be able to answer promptly and I did. I said I didnt know.Ch. 6Your true pilot cares nothing about anything on earth but the river, and his pride in his occupation surpasses the pride of kings.Ch. 7By the Shadow of Death, but hes a lightning pilot!Ch. 7 Quotes From Chapters 8 and 9 Here is a proud devil, thought I; here is a limb of Satan that would rather send us all to destruction than put himself under obligations to me, because I am not yet one of the salt of the earth and privileged to snub captains and lord it over everything dead and alive in a steamboat.Ch. 8I felt like a skinful of dry bones and all of them trying to ache at once.Ch. 8You can depend on it, Ill learn him or kill him.Ch. 8The face of the water, in time, became a wonderful booka book that was a dead language to the uneducated passenger, but which told its mind to me without reserve, delivering its most cherished secrets as clearly as if it uttered them with a voice. And it was not a book to be read once and thrown aside, for it had a new story to tell every day.Ch. 9 Quotes From Chapter 17 In the space of one hundred and seventy-six years the Lower Mississippi has shortened itself two hundred and forty-two miles. That is an average of a trifle over one mile and a third per year. Therefore, any calm person, who is not blind or idiotic, can see that in the Old OÃ ¶litic Silurian Period, just a million years ago next November, the Lower Mississippi River was upwards of one million three hundred thousand miles long, and stuck out over the Gulf of Mexico like a fishing rod. And by the same token any person can see that seven hundred and forty-two years from now the Lower Mississippi will be only a mile and three quarters long, and Cairo and New Orleans will have joined their streets together, and be plodding comfortably along under a single mayor and a mutual board of aldermen. There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact. Quotes From Chapter 23 Give an Irishman lager for a month, and hes a dead man. An Irishman is lined with copper, and the beer corrodes it. But whiskey polishes the copper and is the saving of him, sir. Quotes From Chapters 43-46 Ive worked up a business here that would satisfy any man, dont care who he is. Five years ago, lodged in an attic; live in a swell house now, with a mansard roof, and all the modern inconveniences.Ch. 43I found the half-forgotten Southern intonations and elisions as pleasing to my ear as they had formerly been. A Southerner talks music. At least it is music to me, but then I was born in the South. The educated Southerner has no use for an r, except at the beginning of a word.Ch. 44In the South the war is what A.D. is elsewhere; they date from it.Ch. 45War talk by men who have been in a war is always interesting; whereas moon talk by a poet who has not been in the moon is likely to be dull.Ch. 45Sir Walter [Scott] had so large a hand in making Southern character, as it existed before the war, that he is in great measure responsible for the war.Ch. 46 Quotes From Chapter 52 The letter was a pure swindle, and that is the truth. And take it by and large, it was without a compeer among swindles. It was perfect, it was rounded, symmetrical, complete, colossal!

Philosophy of the Person and Self Concept Essay - 1

Philosophy of the Person and Self Concept - Essay Example Locke in his  An Essay Concerning Human Understanding  and Jacques Rohault in his  Ultimate Questions: Thinking About Philosophy  use primarily ‘reason’ as their major tool for scientific research and methodological strength. He initially expresses doubt for ‘being’ and goes further to prove the reality of ‘being’. For him, when we doubt a thing or being, we then  ipso facto, by virtue of the existence of ‘doubt’, must know that what we doubt exist as a reality. Doubt we must for Descartes. Otherwise, all apparent reality is a dream or an illusion. This is not an instance of contradiction in Descartes. Here, it is the order and tool of argument is important than any other thing.  Descartes’ critics such as Johannes Caterus, Friar Marin Mersenne, Thomas Hobbes, Antoine Arnauld, Pierre Gassendi and Jesuit Pierre Bourdin point out quite a few criticisms.

Analysis of Movie Posters (Pirates of the Caribbean) - Essay Example The main poster for Pirates of the Caribbean is very amazing. This poster was designed specifically to announce the debut of the movie and the first screening. This poster was created in the US to help create awareness of the new movie. The poster is a typical representation of movies of this genre characterized with a lot of graphic images. Its design, the use of color and images is completely attractive and persuasive for one to go see the movie. The most standing out features of the poster include the title, which has been written in a large artistic font at the bottom of the poster; names of the main actors placed at the top of the poster, a large image in the foreground of one of the main actors and a background image of a ship in stormy water.
